External speaker, Professor Jo Tomalin (San Francisco State University) is delivering this session, which is open to all staff at UCL who teach and present to an audience. 

This session will explore why you have a fear speaking in public and provide practical strategies to increase your confidence and enhance delivery. 

You will learn and practice techniques to improve self-presence and confidence when speaking or presenting in public. 

During the session you will take part in discussions and active participation in a supportive environment. You will learn about the importance of preparation and how to control your fear, while speaking in public. 

This workshop will:

  • introduce breathing exercises 
  • review posture 
  • analyse your body language and;
  • explore how to use your voice to be an effective speaker

Session structure

This is a hybrid course comprising 1 synchronous and 2 asynchronous sessions (approximately 2 hours each session) all conducted on Microsoft Teams:

Session 1: Available from the 27 July at 9am

Introduction - Asynchronous online self-paced introduction to reasons we have fear speaking in public, self-analysis; Discover beginning breathing technique to support the voice, decrease nerves and increase confidence; (available approximately one week before session 2).

Session 2: on the 30 July from 2-4pm


Practice - Synchronous session about developing confidence and practice of breathing techniques (from Session 1 reading) and voice/text exercises; Review body language You will learn about the importance of preparation and how to control your fear, while speaking in public. During the session you will take part in a supportive environment. 

Session 3: Available from the 31st July at 9am

Follow-up (after session 2) Asynchronous online discussion reflecting on personal experience in the practice session and practical strategies for preparation to apply to control fear for effective speaking and presenting in public. Q&A.

After attending this session you will

  • have improved self-confidence when speaking
  • be able to apply breathing and body language techniques to enhance your delivery
  • be able to apply practical preparation strategies for speaking and presenting in public

Who should attend

You should attend if you are a member of UCL staff. 

Postgraduate Teaching Assistants and all early career educators/professional services will find this session particularly useful.
