This course is for all staff at UCL who want to learn about some basic assertiveness techniques that can be used to better communicate with colleagues and resolve tricky situations.
You will hear about a model of assertiveness, created by Anne Dickinson, 'In A Woman in Your Own Right' which enables you to express your thoughts, listen and respect the opinions of others and resolve conflict.
In this session, you will learn how to better communicate with colleagues and students using assertiveness techniques.
This workshop will:
- present a model of assertiveness
- explore techniques to develop your skills
- provide you with tips to tackle tricky conversations
After attending this session you will
- understand how to be more assertive
- be able to take home skills to use to be more assertive
Pre-workshop activity
Before the workshop you need to read the Bill of Rights and make a list of 6-10 situations where you would like to be more assertive; arrange the situations in order of difficulty - 1 = easiest, 10 = most difficult.
You can use these situations for role-plays in the workshop.
Who should attend
You should attend if you are a member of UCL staff who teaches or supports teaching, including professional services.
The workshop is active and involves role- play; wear comfortable clothing and come with a sense of humour!
