Information for current postgraduate (research) students undertaking MPhil and PhD degrees in UCL Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS).
This page provides information from the STS Postgraduate (Research) programme tutor, Dr Tiago Mata (T.Mata @ ucl.ac.uk) and deputy programme tutor, Dr Jack Stilgoe. (J.Stilgoe @ ucl.ac.uk). Looking for a list of current/former PhD Students? Visit our PhD Student Directory.
All research students in STS receive regular reviews of their progress, at 6 months, 1 year, and yearly afterwards. The reviews are organised by the principal supervisor in consultation with the Graduate Tutor and the student. Details are on the STS PhD Moodle site.
Postgraduate Teaching Assistants
STS appoints a number of Postgraduate Teaching Assistants (PGTA's) for each academic session to assist with various undergraduate taught modules. The main duties of the post include: class teaching, academic support for students, a weekly office hour, plus timely coursework and examination marking. Previous teaching experience is an advantage. Further information on how to apply can be found on the STS PhD Moodle page.
Methodology and Academic Development (MAD) programme
The STS Department operates a programme in Methodology and Academic Development for research students, which also satisfies the training requirement for students funded by research councils. Every research student who has not reached the CRS (completing research student) stage must follow this programme, accumulating a minimum of 20 points per year (10 points for part-timers). Activities carried out must be recorded on the online Research Student Log.

All pre-CRS students must maintain records of their progress using the UCL Research Student Log. Please note use of the new Research Student Log is mandatory. Please make sure that both you and your supervisors are registered and keep track of all skills training activities and supervisions through the Research Student Log.
