STS Promotions x2

5 July 2019

The latest round of academic promotions at UCL has included two STS academics - Dr Simon Werrett and Dr Jean-Baptiste Gouyon.

Each year, UCL undergoes the academic promotions process, allowing academics to reach the positions of Professor, Associate Professor, Professorial Research and Teaching Fellow, or Principal Research or Teaching Fellow. This year, two members of STS staff have been promoted.

Having joined the department in 2012 from the University of Washington, Dr Simon Werrett has now been promoted to the position of Professor of History of Science. His work in the department focuses on the Early Modern period, and he has also run modules on Science and Empire and Science in the Soviet Union. Dr Werrett was the main contributor to Lucy Worsley's series on Fireworks in the Tudor Period, and his recent book Thrifty Science looks at how scientists have taken thrifty, sustainable approaches to their work throughout the years. You can watch a series of short videos on the Thrifty Science book via the department YouTube channel.

Dr Jean-Baptiste Gouyon has also been promoted to the position of Associate Professor in Science Communication. Following the completion of his PhD at the University of York, and several appointments as a Teaching Fellow, Jean-Baptiste was given the position of Lecturer in the department in 2017. As well as acting as undergraduate admissions tutor, Dr Gouyon is responsible for the two Science Journalism modules run in the department.

Our congratulations go to both Dr Werrett and Dr Gouyon. Their promotions take effect in October 2019. For the full list of UCL promotions for 2019, visit the Promotions list page.
