Public Policy Online Modules
Course Description:

These free modules are designed to help staff and students gain an overview of the UK policy ecosystem, build their skills in academic-policy engagement and generate wider policy impact.

Course content:

  • An overview of the policy ecosystem and strategies and resources to incorporate academic-policy engagement into your work.

  • How to translate research into broader contexts and engage with policy actors, networks and organisations.

  • Writing to support policy development, covering both what civil servants and ministers expect, with a focus on Select Committee inquiries and policy briefs.

  • Practical guidance and insights into how to communicate research findings with public audiences through social media (LinkedIn and Twitter) and blogs.

  • Why to host a roundtable and/or a policy advisory group, how-to guidance, and case studies from UCL researchers with first-hand experience organising roundtables and policy advisory groups.

  • What stakeholder mapping is and the benefits mapping can have for your research impact.


  • Objectives:

    By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Navigate the varying pathways to policy engagement and impact and be motivated to share your own work and expertise with different actors across the evidence ecosystem.
  • Tailor your written communication through policy briefs, select committee responses, social media and blogs to frame your research for public and policy audiences.
  • Map and analyse the stakeholders most relevant to your research and engage them in various activities, including policy advisory groups and policy roundtables.
