Heads of Departments Leadership Development Induction
Course Description:

The programme has been developed based on research of what past HoDs needed during their induction period, therefore it has been designed to meet the needs of individual leaders with lived experience. The Leadership Development Induction programme will enable an effective transition into the Head of Department role for newly appointed staff, including achieving early role clarity and effectiveness. It will help new HoDs understand the drivers of change at a University, Faculty and Departmental level. This can help give clarity and context to the newly appointed role and the way that UCL works. The programme will provide an easy-to-understand description of the “UCL way”, how to navigate the organisational systems effectively, help clarify the leadership contribution that will allow the department and its people to thrive, and provide the first steps towards developing a leadership community that can connect UCL leaders to each other in support of their wellbeing and effectiveness. 


The key areas of learning include: 

  • People Management 
  • Role Transition 
  • Self-Leadership 
  • Strategic Leadership 
  • Policy and Processes 

How will the training be delivered? 

  • The training will be a mix of self-learning and learning with peers  
  • The training will incorporate a blended approach via e-learning and live sessions. 
  • The training has a consistent feedback process to help us monitor learning and its impact to support continuous improvement.

Who is the HoD induction programme aimed at? 

  • Newly recruited Head of Departments (Equivalent roles) at UCL are invited to join this induction programme.  
  • The programme is aimed at those in HoD roles since August 2020. If there are HoDs that have been with the organisation before August 2020 they are welcome to join the course but there may be some overlap with what they have already learnt since beginning their role.
