DSD: Managing Long Documents in Word 2016
Course Description:

This blended learning course is designed to help you to Microsoft Word to write and format your dissertation, thesis or long report.

This course involves:

  • around two hours of online, video and web based learning
  • exercise sheets linked to the topics covered in the learning materials
  • an online workshop to consolidate your learning

To benefit fully from the course you should complete all of these elements.

Once you have booked on the course you will be able to access all of the online materials in our Digital Skills Development Moodle course. These include a short introduction video that explain how the course is delivered.


You should have a good basic understanding Microsoft Word.


Please ensure you are using Desktop@UCL or the UCL VPN when booking because you need to be on the UCL network to use the system.

Please ensure you complete any necessary pre-learning (found in our Moodle course) before starting the live element of the training.

Once you have enrolled, you will need to click on the play button under 'My current enrolments' in My Learning to join at the time of the live session. You will also receive an email containing the direct joining link at least a day before the session.

We would encourage those who are new to Microsoft Teams to join within the first 15 minutes of the advertised start time in order to test out their connection/audio. The actual session will start on the hour.

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Undersand and use styles
  • use automatic heading numbering
  • Add captions to images
  • Create cross references
  • Understand and use page breaks and section breaks
  • Insert headers, footers and page numbers
  • Create an automatic a table of contents

This course is aimed at those wishing to learn how to layout a long document in Word.
