DSD: Creating accessible documents with LaTeX (Campus-based)
Course Description:

Master accessible document basics with LaTeX. Learn the basics of document production with LaTeX and how to produce materials that are inclusive and adaptible

LaTeX is a de facto standard for authoring documents in many STEM disciplines. It is used not only in publishing academic research but also in preparing materials for teaching and learning. This session will look at the ways we can make documents prepared with LaTeX more accessible and so make teaching and learning more inclusive.The issues covered are relevant to markdown and Rmarkdown users as well as LaTeX users.

PREREQUISITES:

Awareness of document preparation in LaTeX or Markdown.

This is a single three hour workshop based session that takes place on campus.


Objectives:
At the end of this course you will be able to:
  • Explain accessibility concerns
  • Use standard LaTeX techniques to enhance accessibility
    • structure
    • fonts and typefaces
    • margins
    • hyperlinks
  • Understand inserting comments into PDFs vs using captions
  • Make decisions on the use of colour
  • Use pandoc to generate HTML or docx formats
    • create MathML output
Intended Audience:
This course is aimed at those who wish to learn how to use LaTeX to create more accessible materials.
