Laser Safety Officer
Course Description:
This one-day virtual training course runs every spring and is hosted by Aurora Health Physics. It is designed for individuals who will be appointed as a departmental Laser Safety Officer (LSO) or as a refresher for those already appointed to this role.

It will provide nominated LSOs with the information and knowledge needed to effectively carry out the role of Laser Safety Officer at UCL.

The course meets the requirements of The Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010 and the LSO responsibilities outlined in the UCL Artificial Optical Radiation Safety Standard
Objectives:

By completing this course you will gain an understanding of the following:
  • Basics of laser radiation
  • Biological effects of laser radiation (including indirect effects)
  • Effective laser safety management
  • The role of the Laser Safety Officer at UCL
  • Approving laser risk assessments and setups
  • Practical control measures (hierarchy of controls, including PPE)
  • Incidents, accidents and contingency plans
  • Legislation, standards, and guidance
Intended Audience:
Nominated Laser Safety Officers.

Users of laser systems that include Class 3R, 3B and 4 lasers; room users where Class 3R, 3B and 4 lasers are used.
