The Writing Series: Writing and Publishing a Research Paper (Self-paced)
Course Description:

This self-paced online course will teach you how to structure and write a research paper, choose a suitable journal and get it through peer review. A course to follow at your own pace online, with videos, forums and exercises.

This course will cover:

  • Writing style for journals
  • The writing process
  • Structuring a paper
  • The title and abstract
  • Choosing a journal
  • Peer review
  • Publicising your paper

This course is provided by Cofactor and can be accessed via the Moodle Page. It has been developed by Cofactor founder Anna Sharman, an experienced researcher trainer who has been a postdoc, an in-house biology journal editor and a publishing consultant.

Objectives:

By the end of this course you will:

  • Know what aspects of the paper to focus on the most
  • Have a set of key sentences written about your next paper
  • Be well on the way to putting these sentences together into an abstract
  • Understand the most important criteria to use when choosing a journal
  • Know how to deal with the decision of the journal
  • Have a treasure trove of up-to-date tips on academic writing and how journals work
Intended Audience:
This course is suitable for researchers at all levels, including those who are starting to write their first paper for a journal and those who have already written and published several papers. It can be taken by researchers in all areas of academia but the examples used are mostly from science, technology, medicine and social sciences.
