The Writing Series: Publishing Outside Academia
Course Description:

With the Public Engagement requirement of the REF in mind, the course, tutored by a highly experienced literary journalist and science writer, introduces techniques of literary and journalistic writing geared towards wider publication.

This session will cover:

  • The structural and stylistic differences between academic and literary text
  • Elements of literary and journalistic style
  • The infrastructure of literary communication: newspapers, magazines, broadcasts, books, online
  • The importance for the REF of writing for a wider audience

Please complete pre-course exercises prior to the live session. These will be sent to you via email from the the course facilitator.


Objectives:

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Add colour and stylistic edge to your writing
  • Understand writing strategies for both academic and literary outlets
  • Find your way in literary, popular science and journalistic publishing
  • Negotiate the requirements of the REF and public access policies
