Preparing for Student Module Selection

14 February 2022

Find out what preparation is underway for the launch of student module selection and why meeting the CMIS deadline of 1 April is so important

From 4 April UCL’s returning students will begin selecting their preferred modules for the 2022-23 academic year.

Asking students to select earlier in the year will give departments more time to plan, address any issues and consider options long before Start of Session.  This will improve the student experience. Our students will know what they are studying earlier and will be able to resolve queries and seek guidance at a less stressful time of the year.

In preparation for the launch of module selection, we are busy updating the student webpages and FAQs and drafting communication to ensure students understand each step in the revised module selection process. We are also finalising these messages with a communications advisory group made up of colleagues from across faculties and departments. Key dates will be clearly communicated so that students understand they select their preferred modules by May and will find out their confirmed modules in July.

A series of Leadership Briefings are also taking place in the coming weeks to update Faculty senior leadership.

Key dates & deadlines for Student Module Selection

Teaching events need to be entered in CMIS: completed by 1 April

Before submitting their modules in Portico students will be asked to check their draft timetable to identify any timetable clashes. That’s why the CMIS deadline is so important.

It’s important to meet this deadline as the information entered into CMIS will be used by students to check for clashes when selecting their preferred modules. We want to prevent clashes as much as possible and we will be encouraging students to check their timetables.

Curriculum Data Maintenance: completed by 25 February

The Curriculum Data Maintenance: Modules and Assessments and Programme Diet Maintenace tasks is open and you have until 25 February to make the following changes:

  • Withdraw, suspend and un-suspend modules for 2022/23
  • Amend module delivery teaching terms
  • Amend module catalogue information such as the module description, keywords, contact information and tutor
  • Update your continuing student programme diets

Assessment Changes for 2022/23: completed by 25 February

We have now made available spreadsheets based on the current module assessment data for 2022/23 for you to record module delivery assessment changes for 2022/23 instead of completing a Module Amendment Form (MAF). On the spreadsheet, you will be able to indicate the following:

  • Assessment weighting changes
  • Changes to methods of assessment

Faculty approval will be required on these spreadsheets for changes.

The Student Lifecycle team will be holding a further briefing session about module selection staff at the end of March. Details of this session will be cascaded to depts from your student records manager or your faculty.
