New UG Classification Regulations

18 May 2021

First main cohort of undergraduates due to complete in 2020/21

Three-year Bachelors programmes now fall under new classification regulations for 2020/21 finalists onwards.

Four- and five-year UG programmes will continue to use the former regulations this year

The new regulations include three classification schemes which determine how many credits ‘count’ in the classification, and the weighting for each year of study:

Example: 3-Year Bachelors:

Scheme A:

  • Year 1: Best 90 credits, weighted at 1
  • Year 2: Best 90 credits, weighted at 3
  • Year 3: All 120 credits, weighted at 5.

Scheme B:

  • Year 1: All 120 credits, weighted at 1
  • Year 2: All 120 credits, weighted at 3
  • Year 3: All 120 credits, weighted at 5.

Scheme C:

  • Year 1: Weighted at 0
  • Year 2: All 120 credits, weighted at 3
  • Year 3: All 120 credits, weighted at 5.
  • Scheme A is the default.
  • Scheme B applies to Engineering, MAPS, and the School of Pharmacy.
  • Scheme C applies to Laws.

There are also standardised rules for borderline candidates, and for how rounding is used.

Covid-19 Changes:

Please note that there are also changes to the Borderline rules due to Covid 19  – 2020-21 Exam Boards will need to apply both the new regulations and the Covid 19 regulations this year.
