No Detriment - Update

An update on changes to regulations and processes in Portico

The Examination and Assessment Contingency Panel has approved a number of temporary amendments to progression, award and classification regulations to ensure that no student will be academically disadvantaged by the current extraordinary circumstances and the alternative assessment and teaching methods that we have introduced. The basic approach of this ‘no detriment’  approach is to use only the best 50% of the 2019/20 credits for classification purposes, unless this would disadvantage the student. More details can be found on the Teaching Continuity pages.

Following the approval of the policy, Academic Services are in the process of verifying every UCL classification algorithm and progression rule to meet these changes – there are around 293 different rules to be rewritten. Full details for each programme will be published via Portico, first to staff for checking, and then to students. The algorithms for finalists will be published first.

Student Records are now working on understanding the new regulations for each programme and setting them up in Portico.  We anticipate nearly all programmes will be able to work via Portico. We are just working to test these now and write documentation on how these will work. The revised award rules will work by running the two rules on the system and then create a progression minute for the rule that meets the criteria for each student. Once these have passed initial testing we will be reaching out to Faculties and departments to test these and ensure they are documented and understood.
