Online Careers resources for students

8 April 2020

UCL Careers staff are working on adapting existing and creating new online resources to support students and their changing needs in these challenging times.

We are anticipating that a large number of graduate roles/summer work experience opportunities will be cancelled or postponed by employers. However, for many employers it’s too early to make firm decisions on such roles but an initial survey from the Institute of Student Employers (ISE) reported that 27% of recruiters would definitely be recruiting fewer graduates (with internships expected to take an even bigger hit). The majority are moving to online interviews and assessment centres. UCL Careers workshops will include exploring options for remote internships, and supporting students in other ways they can build skills and experience over the summer to meet the on-going demand for work experience related learning and professional development. We are also running a number of workshops that focus on virtual interviews and assessment centres, and networking and connecting with employers remotely.

One-to-one appointments are available online and many events are still going ahead remotely too. With this programme of new and adapted support, we aim to continue to provide as many work experience opportunities as possible and to ensure our students are able to continue to increase and maintain their career readiness.

As well as keeping in touch with professional organisations such as the ISE for labour market updates, we are also actively surveying recruiters and collecting labour market information to learn:

  • What employers are predicting in relation to number of internships and graduate roles
  • How the current situation is affecting their recruitment methods
  • And what it means for those who were due to start a graduate role, internship or work this summer

Once we get more information we will disseminate it in due course.
