About the Qualification

Each Diploma qualification is based around an Individual Line of Learning, such as ‘Engineering’. The qualification has three components:

  1. Principal Learning. This component is sector-related and mandatory, focusing on developing and applying the knowledge and skills that are relevant to an industry sector.
  2. Generic Learning. This encourages students to develop and apply the broad skills and knowledge necessary for learning, employment and personal development. This component includes functional skills in English, Mathematics and ICT, personal learning and thinking skills, work experiences and an extended project.
  3. Additional and Specialist Learning. This component allows learners the opportunity to specialise or to take up relevant complementary learning, such as a GCE A-level.

Therefore, UCL requires the Diploma to include a GCE A-Level as the Additional and Specialist Learning, plus one additional A-Level on top.

The current Individual Lines of Learning are:

  • Business Administration and Finance
  • Construction and the Built Environment
  • Creative and Media
  • Engineering
  • Environmental and Land-based Studies
  • Hair and Beauty Studies
  • Hospitality
