Risk assessment training

This virtual instructor-led course will help staff and students to develop skills in assessing the risks associated with their workplace and complete a suitable and sufficient risk assessment.

Course description


The risk assessment training course is a 3-part series broken down into 3 distinct one-hour workshops. Each workshop covers a different area of the risk assessment process and has its own learning objectives. It Is recommended that you complete all 3 workshops to equip you with all the necessary skills to conduct a suitable and sufficient risk assessment. To ensure you have an interactive experience, places on each workshop are restricted.

Prerequisites

You must complete the Principles of Risk Assessment eLearning module before attending the course.

A record of training will be verified only when both the Principles of Risk Assessment module and attendance on the workshop(s) are completed.

All safety instructor-led training courses are delivered by our team of safety experts.

Objectives


By completing each workshop, you will be able to do the following: 

Workshop 1 - Hazards and Descriptions


  • Clearly describe activities and locations in a risk assessment
  • Identify hazards, how they can cause harm and who may be harmed
  • Understand who can be involved in the risk assessment process

Workshop 2 - Risk and Control Measures


  • Evaluate the risk associated with hazards using the risk matrix
  • Apply the hierarchy of risk control when determining control measures to put in place
  • Determine the residual risk after control measures have been put in place

Workshop 3 - Approval and Review


  • Understand the risk assessment approval process
  • Understand when a risk assessment would require a review
  • Effectively review a risk assessment

Target audience


All staff involved in the carrying out, reviewing or approving of risk assessments.

Although it is recommended that learners undertake the full course in chronological order, it is not mandatory to do so.

Therefore, learners can attend certain workshops if they have a learning gap, require a refresher or if training needs analysis identifies that particular element of the risk assessment process as important for them.

For example, for those in senior positions who only approve risk assessments and do not carry them out, they may only require attendance at Workshop 3 of this risk assessment training. 

Cost


Training courses are free to UCL staff however your Department will be charged £50 if you fail to attend when booked on a course.

External delegates


Places to external delegates are only offered if there is spare capacity on an instructor-led course.

Please email safetytraining@ucl.ac.uk to be placed on a waiting list stating the course title and date you wish to join.
