Entry requirements

A minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor's degree from a UK university in a suitable engineering subject, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Candidates with qualifications in other subjects allied to engineering will also be considered.

The English language level for this course is: Level 1

About this degree

This multidisciplinary Master’s course has been specifically designed to help engineers develop entrepreneurial skills.

Co-delivered by UCL Mechanical Engineering and the UCL School of Management, you will learn to harness the transformative power of emerging technologies to drive commercial applications and business innovation.

Throughout the course , you will hone your business skills through practical exercises in entrepreneurship and project management, helping you understand how to effectively commercialise your talents and expertise in emerging technologies and markets.

This MSc enables you to develop a tailored learning pathway to meet your innovation objectives. You will select modules to enhance your expertise in fields such as biomedical engineering, advanced computer applications, control and robotics, entrepreneurial finance, or advanced materials science, depending on your specific interests.

Accreditation

This programme has been accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

The accredited MSc will meet, in part, the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineering. Accredited MSc graduates who also have a BEng (Hons) accredited for CEng will be able to show that they have satisfied the educational base for CEng registration.

Teaching and learning

This MSc course is delivered through a mix of tutorials, lectures, projects and practicals, which frequently draw upon real-life industry case studies.

Assessment is through examinations, presentations, essays, coursework, and your individual and group projects.

Full-time students on this course can expect approximately 12-16 hours of contact hours a week. Outside these sessions, students are expected to engage in significant self directed study and complete assessments of around 20-25 hours per week. The exact number of contact hours and composition varies throughout the terms depending on the module choices of the student. A full-time weekly schedule will amount to 35-40 hours a week, which comprises contact time, self-directed study, and preparing for assessments.

Your individual and group project modules will see you conduct research, write up your final report, and engage in regular contact with your project supervisor(s), who will guide and support you throughout your projects.

Modules

You will undertake six taught modules, plus an Innovation and Group Design Project and an Individual Research Project. Four taught modules are compulsory, and two optional modules can be selected from a list of available options. Taught modules comprise lectures, seminars and tutorials and are assessed based on examinations and/or submitted coursework.

For the Innovation and Group Design Project, you will form small groups and work on various stages of new product development, including conception, design for manufacture, and formulation of a business plan. You may also be given supplementary lectures on innovation and commercialisation. The Innovation and Group Design Project is assessed via written reports and presentations.

The Individual Research Project (March to September) is carried out under the supervision of an academic member of staff. It is evaluated based on a written report and a project presentation.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded an MSc in Engineering with Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

UCL has computing facilities available, including department study spaces but you may prefer to purchase your own laptop, which will require additional costs. For some project work and training activities, students might incur minor expenses, which can be reimbursed by the department if an approved expenses claim is submitted.  

Optional industry visits (field trips) are offered that may incur additional costs. The exact cost of each fieldtrip will be dependent on the location and the mode of travel.
