Student Spotlight: Nitish, Paediatrics and Child Health MSc

10 April 2023

We speak to Nitish, MSc Paediatrics and Child Health student, about his background, career goals, and why he chose to study the programme.

Paediatrics and Child Health MSc Nitish

What attracted you to study a Master’s in Peadiatrics and Child Health at UCL?

Aside from the fact that it is one of the highest-ranked universities globally with world-renowned professional staff and facilities, the range of module selection offered by the course allowed me to tailor my study and focus on the areas that I am most interested in. Child health is an expanding field that extends beyond the context of medical science and also involves factors that influence the overall wellbeing of the child as well as their transition into the adults that they will become.

What are your future goals post-graduation?

Upon completion of the MSc, I intend to integrate the knowledge that I have obtained into my paediatric residency training programme in Indonesia. In the future, I aspire to work as a paediatrician with an optimal balance between clinical practice, clinical teaching, and research.

What do you like about your programme and why?

One of the things that I find particularly interesting about this programme is the opportunity to tailor the course to meet your professional interests. With a huge list of modules both inside and outside the Faculty to choose from, you can design the course the way you want it. Not only did this course meet my expectations, it soared miles beyond it!

What can a student expect to learn on this course?

If you are looking to enrich your knowledge on the various aspects of paediatrics, or within a certain area of interest within the context of child health, then this is the right course to apply for. Moreover, you also have the opportunity to expand your network, as you will encounter various professionals and experts in your area of interest.

What were you doing before you became a student at UCL?

Prior to my enrolment at UCL, I completed my Bachelor of Medical Science degree at the University of Melbourne and obtained my MD from Universitas Indonesia.

What piece of advice would you give to new students?

Make the most of your experience, right from the start. Have discussions with the course directors and teaching fellows, as they can help you develop your interests and guide you to select the modules and research project that best suit your professional interests. Interact with the experts you encounter and engage with them, and you may just discover your passion (if you haven’t already)!

Where do you identify as home?

Jakarta, Indonesia.
