Ageing has a significant impact on the adaptive immune response to infections such as influenza. These impacts include age-related changes that are intrinsic to T cell populations as well as changes in the aging tissue environment, especially the accumulation of senescent cells and disruption of the lymphoid stroma in secondary immune organs. Furthermore, these age-related changes in immunity can impact non-immune organs such as skeletal muscle, which can severely impact the ability of older adults to function independently. Our work focuses on examining these age-related changes and the mechanisms responsible as well as determining how they can be overcome in order to increase the healthspan of older adults.
