UCLMS statement: Admissions 2020

18 August 2020

We welcome yesterday’s announcement by the Secretary of State about changes that allow teacher assessments to be used to determine the grades that reflect fairly the hard work of every individual.

UCL Main Quad

We recognise that the last few months, and in particular the last week, have been a difficult and distressing period for all university applicants. We are sorry that so many students are in the confusing and upsetting position of not getting the university place they feel they deserve.

We welcome yesterday’s announcement by the Secretary of State about changes that allow teacher assessments to be used to determine the grades that reflect fairly the hard work of every individual.

It will take a few days to understand what these changes in government policy will mean for applicants to medical schools where there are national controls on the total number of entrants to MBBS programmes.

With our colleagues in UCL admissions and the wider medical schools community, we are working with the Medical Schools Council, the Office for Students, the Department of Health and Social Care and Health Education England to identify a reasonable and workable solution. We will provide more information to applicants in coming days as it becomes available.

UCL’s priority is to be as fair as possible to all applicants, recognising that they have worked hard during unprecedented circumstances and deserve their first choice university.  We are delighted to accept all students who meet the terms of their original offer on all programmes that do not have an externally-determined cap...

For those students who have met our offer to study medicine based on teacher-assessed grades but do not yet have a place confirmed, we are working with the relevant agencies about places this year and we will guarantee a deferred place for next year.
