Providing safe study spaces during the pandemic
3 September 2021
The Student Centre team supported students and staff who needed to work on campus throughout the pandemic.
In October 2020, we opened 512 temporary study spaces in Bidborough House, 1-19 Torrington Place and Ramsay Hall to make up for the reduction of spaces on campus due to Coronavirus restrictions. We were able to do this thanks to staff from across UCL who donated their office space in these buildings. Before they were turned back into offices at the end of Term 3, students and staff made 138,241 bookings.
The UCL Student Centre reopened in June 2020 as part of the university’s carefully managed pilot for resuming activity on campus. It remained open, with 154,634 bookings during the same time period.
Amad Uddin, who manages the Student Centre team, said:
““The staff have been great and we worked with one another supporting each other closely.”
Feedback from users has been positive. One third year medical student said:
“"Having the Student Centre open has been so useful, especially as many of the other libraries I used to visit are currently closed! I struggle to concentrate in my flat - the Student Centre provides a quiet, distraction free environment to get a couple of hours of work in!”
Moving forward
We must still work together to protect each other. Please continue to abide by the UCL Community Commitment to Protect each other and be considerate to people’s needs.
You must still book study spaces in the Student Centre and UCL Learning Spaces. Please check the Library Services Updates webpage for the latest information.
