Portfolio

If you wish to apply for one of these degrees during the UPC, you will also need to submit the following as part of your UPC application:

Once we have processed your complete application, we will email you with details of how to submit the above.

If you’re accepted on to the UPC to apply to one of the degrees above, you will need to continue to develop your work during Term 1 of the UPC, before applying through UCAS in January.

Students aiming for an architecture-related degree

You should apply for UPC for Architecture and submit a portfolio, if you wish to apply for the following architecture-related degrees during the UPC:

  • Architecture BSc/MSci
  • Architectural and Interdisciplinary Studies BSc
  • Engineering and Architectural Design MEng.

We will assess your portfolio, and if it is of suitable standard, we will progress your application to the next stage.

In your portfolio, you need to demonstrate your art, design and drawing skills. Here are some guidelines.

Freehand observational drawings

Please provide six freehand observational drawings.

Your drawings should be based on looking at real three-dimensional objects, places or people. Do not draw from photos/reproductions/other two-dimensional sources.

You should time your drawings, noting the drawing time on each piece. Please provide:

  • three 5-minute drawings
  • one 15-minute drawing
  • one 60-minute drawing
  • one 90-minute drawing.

Other examples of work

To show how you develop visual ideas and engage with different media, send us a minimum of 12 examples of your work.

Your work can come from your everyday life and experiences of space, place and daily activities, it does not need to be architecture related.

We are particularly interested to see how you progress an idea from an initial sketch/photo etc. into a more developed piece of work. Show us the stages in your creative process.

At least three of the examples should be of three-dimensional work in any media e.g. model/sculpture.

In addition, choose at least two more media from the list below:

  • drawing
  • painting
  • collage
  • photography
  • film
  • 3D (any media).

After we receive your portfolio, we might ask you to provide further examples of your work.

Before the UPC, we recommend students aiming for an architecture related degree take one of these courses:
