Blog written by Gosia Zborowska, Head of Research Contracts

I have been part of the JRO for past six years having started as one of Contracts Managers and then progressing into a senior managerial role. While finishing my legal master’s degree I started working in one of London R&D offices as a contracts specialist when I developed an interest in that legal area albeit it may be considered as niche. My team members come from diverse backgrounds varying from public sectors or commercial industry to fresh university graduates. Our aim is to make our workforce environment inclusive and welcoming to all.

My career into research contracting has been a fulfilling and rewarding experience as every day is never the same. As our office enables the research at UCLH/UCL, we contribute to that process by providing legal and contractual advice for all research projects both non-commercial and commercial. Every day we work with a variety of stakeholders such as other NHS trusts, universities, charities, large pharma and global tech companies, which makes our job even more interesting and it does provide an opportunity progress onto other legal roles.

Some of our previous team members found employment in legal sector in other universities, pharmaceutical industry, tech giants such as Google, or even banks! This proves that gaining experience at UCLH may provide unlimited opportunities in further career development. I am also very happy and proud that I could provide training and guidance to these individuals thanks to my nine-year experience in this particular legal field and see how their careers have blossomed over time.

For me, this is the most rewarding highlight and an incentive for personal development both in a research legal sphere as well as a leader.
