Research summary
Imaging the brain to demonstrate both the structure and function of the brain, and their abnormalities in the various forms of epilepsy. This is to understand the pathophysiology of the causes and consequences of the epilepsies. The techniques are also being translated to have direct clinical relevance with the use of these methods to direct specific treatment for individual patients, particularly neurosurgical treatment. A further area is to develop methods of detecting abnormalities of cardiac rhythm and breathing that may occur in seizures, to prevent death occuring as a consequence of epileptic seizures.
