International Clinical Trials Day 2016 at the Leonard Wolfson Experimental Neurology Centre CRF

31 May 2016

Over 100 visitors attended the Leonard Wolfson Experimental Neurology Centre (LWENC) Clinical Research Facility (CRF), UCL Institute of Neurology on our third annual open day held on 20th May 2016, to mark International Clinical Trials Day (ICTD).

ICTD celebrates the day that James Lind, a Scottish naval surgeon, started his famous study to compare six treatments as part of a prospective controlled trial to treat scurvy in 1747, marking the start of clinical trials and clinical research as we know it today. The LWENC CRF opened its doors to all visitors to meet CRF staff and learn about the CRFs latest activities.

The event was very well attended this year, with visitors from a variety of backgrounds including neurology patients, carers, members of the general public, industry partners, charities, NHS staff and research students.

This year our open day featured eight research information stalls including Join Dementia Research, the Huntington’s Disease Association, the Motor Neurone Disease Association, and Movement for Hope.

A research photo campaign was set up for visitors to state what research meant to them, and visitors had an opportunity to take part in research on the day by signing up for the UCL BioResource. We also had our laboratory open with a mock wet-lab set-up with water, pipettes, test tubes and other materials for anyone interested in learning more about how samples are processed at the CRF.

The highlights of this years event were our keynote speakers, Dr Vincenzo Libri, Head of the LWENC CRF, who gave the audience an update about the CRFs latest activities, followed by an inspiring talk from Sarah Ezekiel, a patient-advocate living with motor neurone disease and a talented eye-gaze artist who shared her experiences of being a patient and participating in clinical trials. The day’s activities were accompanied by live music by Martin Vishnick, a guitarist and composition instructor. Visitor feedback from the event was excellent.
