There are a number of PPI resources available to researchers, patients, carers, and public members to access if they want to get involved in PPI.

UCL Projects and Opportunities for thsoe within UCL

UCLH PPI Funding 

If you have been thinking about involving patients and the public in your research, but are in need of funding to support this involvement, these bursaries are for you.  Priority is currently being given to PPI in covid-19 research.

They offer up to four £500 starter grants to researchers looking to run small PPI activities, and one innovation grant worth up to £2000 to researchers planning a PPI activity that uses an innovative approach to involving patients and the public that will have a wider impact on the practice of PPI. They are also offering two grants of up to £300 specifically for PhD students to carry out PPI.

Researchers and PhD students are eligible if they – or the lead researcher for their project – are based at UCL.

Applications are particularly invited from those who plan to involve groups who are currently under-represented in research.

Partner with community champions to embed real-world social impact projects in your teaching

UCL’s Community Engaged Learning Service (CELS) has been working with three community partners in Camden to develop ideas for collaborative teaching projects that have a real-world outcome.

Grand Challenges: Small Grants

Apply for up to £5,000 to support a cross-faculty, cross disciplinary project. For all sorts of research-informed, societally relevant, cross-disciplinary/cross-boundary activities. Proposals should relate to one of the six strands of the UCL Grand Challenges (weblink) programme. Relevance to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to the programme’s three pan-GC themes (weblink)  will also be of interest:

Biochemical Society Outreach Grants 

The Biochemical Society’s Scientific Outreach Grants are currently open and will be accepting applications until 20 September 2021. This scheme supports the development of scientific outreach and public engagement activities that communicate the excitement of molecular bioscience to young people and the community with sums of up to £1000. You can apply from anywhere in the world and do not need to be a society member. You can find further details on the scheme at this weblink. Shape the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement Conference

The call for Engage 2021 contributions is now open!

They are doing things a little differently this year by asking people to contribute to the Engage Unconference, which will take place online from Monday 11th October to Friday 12th November and includes an opportunity to share practice (good and bad) at the Engage Exhibition. The main Engage Conference will be curated by the NCCPE this year by drawing on the outcomes from the Unconference, so this is a great opportunity to really shape the event.

There are two assessment deadlines based on the timeline that best suits your activity: 17th Aug (best for live activities for example) and 23rd September. More details on the call and the themes can be found on the Engage 2021 webpage at this weblink:

This year’s Engage Conference will be on 1^st – 2^nd December 2021 and, for the first time, we will also be running be the Engage ‘Unconference’ – a plethora of activities, bringing our community together in the weeks leading up to Engage to address the issues we collectively face. There will also be an opportunity to share engagement practice in the Engage Exhibition.

Submit a story or short film to the Social Research Association

Ever produced some creative writing or short films from your research experience? For the first time ever the Social Research Association is running a Research Compendium during its online annual conference on Thursday 25 November 2021. We are looking for attendees to submit written pieces or short films to display in the Research Compendium. Presenters will have a chance to discuss their submissions and take questions from the audience during a networking session running on Thursday 25 November. One presenter for each submission will pay a reduced conference delegate fee. And there will be the opportunity for your work to be considered for inclusion in an upcoming book series.
