Hugo receiving his award

Many congratulations to Hugo Layard Horsfall who won the European Association of Neurological Societies 2022 Research Fund Prize. Hugo accepted the award in Belgrade, Serbia during a plenary session. The award was for work he undertook whilst at UCL/GOSH: First-in-human experience using novel ultra-flexible low-impedance electrode arrays: an IDEAL Stage 1 study.

Hugo, said: “The aim of the study is evaluate the safety and feasibility of using such an electrode to understand single unit (individual neuron) activity in children undergoing neurosurgery for epilepsy. Should we better understand this relationship of individual neurons and how they interact to affect overall brain excitability, it would pave the way for advanced precision nueromodulation to detect and abort seizures before they present clinically. In the long term, to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with treatment-resistant epilepsy."
