Trade Unions

Guidance in regards to the recognition, representation and facilities arrangements for Trade Unions representing UCL staff.


The following trade unions are recognised by UCL to represent UCL staff and to negotiate terms and conditions of employment on their behalf.

  • The University and College Union (UCU) is recognised by UCL to represent its Academic, Research and Teaching staff, and Professional Services staff at grade 7 and above. See the UCL UCU website.

  • UNISON is recognised by UCL to represent its Clerical, Secretarial, Manual and Ancillary staff. Please see the UCL UNISON website.

Facility Time 

The Trade Union (Facility Time Publication Requirements) Regulations 2017, following the enactment of the Trade Union Act 2016, requires public sector employers to publish information on facility time. Trade Union representatives and their line managers should review the guidance regarding time off for TU activities and duties.
