The overall aim of Dewi's research is to improve the understanding of hepatitis C epidemiology aiming to inform public health strategies working towards HCV eradication. This project includes a case study of hepatitis C which is currently being conducted in Guernsey, which is chosen due to its well-established health care infrastructures, the opportunity to treat the HCV patients with the new treatment funded by the government, and supported by a well characterised high risk populations on the area with little migration that creates fantastic opportunity to assess the feasibility of hepatitis C eradication in closed population on a larger scale. The study will investigate the true prevalence of hepatitis C among high-risk individuals who access clinical services in Guernsey and use full-length viral genome sequencing assess the HCV transmission and viral evolution on the island to inform future work around treatment and eradication.
