Having navigated the application process and witnessed peers embark on the same journey, I'm happy to share some tips for applying to the MSc Digital Health and Entrepreneurship at UCL.
Pre-application:
Read the Programme Prospectus page in detail and conduct independent research on this programme. Dive deep into the curriculum, faculty profiles, and career outcomes of graduates. Understand the program's unique strengths and how it complements your skillset and aspirations. Check the entry requirements and read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). You can findmore information on English language requirements and qualification equivalence for international applicants at the International Students website. Please read the Application Guidance before proceeding with your application.
Craft a compelling personal statement to support your application. Outline your academic interest and reasons for applying to this programme. Weave a narrative that showcases your passion for digital health and entrepreneurship, highlighting specific experiences and skills that make you a strong candidate. Highlight your stellar academic achievements and research experience, particularly in areas relevant to healthcare or business. Be clear, concise, and genuine!
Attend the virtual open day and better understand the program structure, curriculum, and teaching approaches. You can take this opportunity to ask the burning questions during Q&A sessions to gauge the program's intensity, faculty expertise, and overall fit for your learning style and interests. Usually, a current student will also be involved in the open day, providing a first-hand glimpse into the learning environment.
Develop a firm reference. A strong reference letter will undoubtedly boost your application. Select the right person who knows you well or has witnessed your academic ability and work ethic and can speak to your potential within the program. It's a good practice to contact your nominated referee before starting the application to check if they can provide a testimonial for you. This programme only requires one reference who has previously taught you during your undergraduate academic year. However, a professional reference is preferred if you have been out of higher education for more than four years. For more details, you may refer to Selecting your reference.
During application:
It is advisable to start your university application as soon as possible as the course is highly competitive, and spaces can be filled quickly.
Check all the checklists and review the required documents before hitting the "submit" button. It's good to have someone to proofread your statements. Pay close attention to application deadlines and submit all required documents well in advance.
Keep in touch with your referee on providing the reference letter to the UCL application portal. If needed, offer to provide any additional information or answer any questions they might have about writing the letter. If you haven't heard back by the deadline, gently send a follow-up email inquiring about the letter's status.
Post-application:
Yay, you have finally applied, but do not just stop right there. There is still more to do before receiving the unconditional offer from UCL.
Prepare for the interview: If shortlisted, anticipate questions about your motivation, relevant experiences, and future goals. Practise your answers in mock interviews and research common interview questions for postgraduate programs.
English language requirements: For international students, book a recognised English qualification test such as IELTS, TOEFL or any recognised test as stated on the website. Do not wait until you receive a decision on your application.
Keep an eye on scholarship opportunities such as the GBSH Women Healthcare Leaders Scholarship, the East London Scholarships, the Global Healthcare Leaders Scholarship, and the Chevening Scholarship, which can help fund your master's studies.
