3 August 2023

Struggling with tough subjects? Student ambassador Intan, a midwife turned analytics student, shares study tips in our blog to conquer challenging areas like informatics and machine learning.

Study Tips for Conquering Difficult Subjects

We've all been there – grappling with challenging subjects in our courses that seem to push our limits and test our patience. As a registered midwife transitioning to an analytics route of global healthcare management, I found several subjects challenging, especially those related to informatics and machine learning. In this blog, I’ll share valuable study tips and strategies to help me succeed in difficult subjects.

1. Set Clear Goals

Define your short-term and long-term goals by reading the handbook or specific course explanations before coming to the class. Having clear objectives will keep you motivated and focused throughout your learning journey.

2. Embrace a Growth Mindset

Before diving into the subject matter, it's essential to develop a growth mindset. Embrace the belief that your intelligence and abilities can be improved through dedication and hard work. Avoid the fixed mindset that assumes intelligence is innate, as this can hinder your motivation to tackle challenging subjects. Remember, every expert was once a beginner, and the path to mastery is a journey of continuous learning and improvement.

3. Break It Down into Manageable Chunks

Difficult subjects can be overwhelming if you approach them as a whole. Instead, break the material down into smaller, manageable chunks. Create a study plan that outlines specific topics or concepts you'll cover each day or week. Tackling one piece at a time will not only make the workload feel more achievable but also help you focus on understanding each concept thoroughly before moving on.

4. Find Your Ideal Learning Style

Everyone learns differently, so it's essential to identify your preferred learning style. Are you a visual learner who benefits from diagrams and charts? Or perhaps an auditory learner who absorbs information through listening and discussion? Experiment with different techniques, such as watching educational videos, using flashcards, or teaching the material to a friend. Discovering your ideal learning style will significantly enhance your comprehension and retention of difficult subjects.

5. Utilise Online Resources

There is an abundance of free and paid online resources available to learn. Take advantage of platforms to access interactive courses and video lessons that cater to different learning styles. UCL also provides free LinkedIn learning resources that are really helpful.

6. Rely on UCL's Resources

As a student at UCL Global Business School for Health, I leverage the university's resources, including libraries, online forums, and peer support networks. GBSH likely offers workshops or clubs where you can interact with other students and faculty.

7. Practice Regularly

Dedicate time each day or week to work on exercises, small projects, or specific tasks. The more you practice, the more confident you'll become.

8. Work on Real-World Projects

Applying learning output to real-world projects helps solidify your understanding and prepares you for practical scenarios.

9. Seek Support and Collaborate with Peers

Don't hesitate to seek support from teachers, classmates, or online communities when tackling difficult subjects. Forming study groups can be particularly beneficial, as discussing the material with peers can provide fresh perspectives and help solidify your understanding. Explaining complex concepts to others can also reinforce your own understanding and identify areas where you need further clarification.

10. Review and Revise

Regularly review and revise the material you've covered. This reinforces your knowledge and helps you identify areas that may need further attention.

11. Stay Consistent and Stay Motivated

Consistency is vital when dealing with challenging subjects. Establish a study routine and stick to it. Consistent effort will yield better results over time, and you'll find that tackling difficult subjects becomes more manageable with dedicated practice. Additionally, stay motivated by setting realistic goals and rewarding yourself for your achievements, no matter how small.

Conquering difficult subjects may seem like an uphill battle, but with the right study tips and strategies, success is within your reach. Remember, you have the power to overcome any academic challenge – one step at a time. Embrace this exciting journey, and don't be discouraged by the challenges that come your way.

Happy studying!
