7 ways to manage several assessments and deadlines

Our Social Media Ambassador, Feham Riaz, shares 7 ways students can tackle multiple assessments and projects during deadline season.


Welcome to the deadline season where every student is swamped with assessments and projects. Don't worry though, as there's no need to hit the panic button just yet! With the right approach, we can manage it all and come out on top. Here are the ways one can tackle multiple assessments and deadlines.

1) Stay organised:

Start by getting yourself organised. Write down all of your deadlines in a planner so you can prioritise your tasks and avoid missing any deadlines. A variety of study planner templates can be found online to make it more interesting. If you prefer to take physical notes, consider writing down or pasting important dates on a surface you frequently look at, such as your fridge, whiteboard or calendar.

2) Utilise academic tools:

Notion is an excellent app that helps you organise your notes, assignments, and deadlines in one place. It is quite like having a notebook in your laptop. It also allows collaboration with classmates on group projects. Similarly, Quizlet is another great tool to help memorise important information. With Quizlet, you can create digital flashcards, take quizzes, and even play games to reinforce learning. Lastly, Miro is another fun tool to brainstorm ideas and dump all your thoughts in one place.

3) Seek support:

Make sure you are aware of the support and wellbeing services offered at UCL. UCL has an exam season toolkit that is updated regularly so make sure to check it out. There is wellbeing support to help students manage stress and anxiety during this busy period. Don't be afraid to reach out and seek help when you need it.

4) Attend assessment tutorials:

Most programs run assessment tutorials before the deadline to aid students. It is strongly advised to attend assessment question answer tutorials and be open about asking questions. Your tutors are there to support you and can provide valuable feedback on your work. By attending these tutorials, you can gain a better understanding of what is expected of you in your assignments.

5) Use effective study techniques:

Utilise scientifically proven study techniques to help improve your memory retention.

  • Active recall is an effective study technique that involves retrieving information from memory rather than just reviewing it. It is more effective than passive review methods, such as re-reading and highlighting.
  • Spaced repetition is another technique that enhances memory retention by reviewing material at gradually increasing intervals. Research has shown that it is more effective for long-term memory retention than cramming.
  • Self-testing and mnemonics are other effective study techniques that can help reinforce learning and improve memory retention.

6) Take breaks:

Remember to go easy on yourself and take breaks when you need them. Taking regular breaks can help maintain focus and avoid burnout. Take a walk, meditate, or do something you enjoy to help you recharge your batteries. Several apps are available on the Google PlayStore and Apple Store for relaxation, these include Calm and Headspace. Evidence has shown that taking breaks can help improve productivity, creativity, and overall well-being.

7) Keep a positive mindset:

Don't forget to stay positive! Managing multiple assessments and deadlines can be tough but try to see it as a chance to learn and grow in your subject area. Don't get too caught up in the stress and pressure. Instead, focus on the progress you're making and the new skills you're developing. So, keep that chin up and believe in yourself!
