UCL Engineering PhD Students Research Festival 2023

17 July 2023

On Thursday 6 July, PhD students in different Engineering departments showcased their research and enjoyed some time together before the summer break!

A group picture of the attendees of the UCL Engineering PhD Research Festical 2023.

This one-day event was a hybrid between a conference with short 7-minute presentations by PhD students and social/networking activities during coffee breaks. In addition, participants also enjoyed a drinks reception to celebrate in the evening!

"The event aimed to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and networking among PhD students from different departments in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences. I believe we definitely succeeded in that while also building a stronger sense of belonging to our fantastic research community of brilliant PhD students"
— Andrea Franchini, UCL Engineering PhD Student Representative.

The event covered a broad range of innovative research from across the faculty, such as sustainability and safe infrastructure, AI and advanced technologies, healthcare innovation, and innovation in materials.

“The UCL Engineering PhD Student Research Festival  is an excellent way to promote such collaboration within the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, which is crucial to solving society’s greatest challenges. The Research Festival showcased high quality research along with excellent leadership. It was inspiring to participate in the festival and I strongly encourage all PhD students to participate in future years. Congratulations to the team of students who organised the event, which I think was very successful.”
— Professor Peter Munro, Vice-Dean Research, UCL Engineering

The full schedule of the event is available online.

Students are leaning over a table, working together on a document and discussing their ideas.
“The UCL Engineering PhD Student Research Festival is an excellent example of a student-led initiative that breaks down disciplinary boundaries and brings real added value to the participants. This year’s Festival was a huge success – combining networking opportunities with a showcase of the depth and breadth of the research being conducted by students across the faculty. I am grateful to the whole team of students behind the event and I look forward to seeing the Festival go from strength-to-strength in years to come.”
— Professor Simon Banks, Director of Education and Faculty Tutor (UCL Engineering)

We hope all participants had a great time learning, meeting other people and enjoyed the experience!

Thank you to everyone who took part, to our wonderful PhD speakers and the dedicated members of staff who agreed to chair the sessions.

We would like to give a special shout-out to Andrea Franchini (UCL Engineering Sciences PGR Faculty Rep), Lucy Todd (UCL Chemical Engineering), Matteo Errigo (UCL Chemical Engineering), and Alice Thompson (Events Officer, UCL Engineering) for their tireless efforts and meticulous planning that made this event a resounding success!
