Dr Caroline Selai

Dr. Caroline Selai, BA (Hons), MSc, PhD, DipPsych, CPsychol, is Senior Lecturer in Clinical Neuroscience at UCL Institute of Neurology. She is a Chartered Psychologist and a trained mediator.

She obtained her PhD in Medical Psychology at UCL and her research interests are in the psychological sequelae of neurological disorders e.g. epilepsy, dementia, Tourette's syndrome, Parkinson's disease and atypical movement disorders such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and multi-system aprophy (MSA).

She has been Head of the Institute of Neurology Education Unit since the unit was established in 2006. She is Co-Director of the UCL MSc in Clinical Neuroscience, MSc and Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Neurology, the Dual Masters in Brain and Mind Sciences, the MSc in Neurology for clinical trainees and the UCL Distance Learning Diploma in Clinical Neurology.

She has supervised and examined a number of MPhil/PhD degrees. Recent student dissertations with a cultural theme have included (i) a review and cross-cultural comparison of societal attitudes towards, diagnosis and treatment of dementia; (ii) a review of epidemiology, risk factors and treatment gaps in epilepsy in sub-Saharan Africa, (iii) ethnographic research conducted in Saudi Arabia into local beliefs about the causes of and traditional treatments for epilepsy. She co-authored a World Health Organisation (WHO) report on the economic aspects of mental health in children and adolescents, background paper prepared for the WHO/HBSC (Health Behaviour in School-aged Children) Forum 2007.

Since 1999, she has an additional role at UCL helping staff and students who are experiencing inter-personal and communication difficulties. She has developed a number of bespoke interventions using a combination of psychological approaches e.g. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), educational strategies e.g. small-group interactive workshops, one-to-one and/or team coaching and group mediation. She has lived in France and speaks French.
