A boost for Jordanian healthcare and medical education

7 June 2022

The Saudi Jordanian Investment Fund (SJIF) has signed a 10 year contract to work in partnership with UCL Medical School (UCLMS) and UCLA Health, to establish a brand new medical school in Jordan.

UCL Medical School

On June 6, 2022, the Jordan Investment Fund (JIF), which represents the Jordanian Government, and the Saudi Jordanian Investment Fund (SJIF) signed a key investment and development agreement for the benefit of the Jordanian healthcare and medical education sectors.

Worth an estimated $400million, the project will create a new university hospital with 300 beds, 60 outpatient clinics, a children hospital, an ambulatory care building, and a medical school with a total capacity for 600 students. The new facility will also educate around 100 new medical students a year. What’s more, this substantial infrastructure project is expected to create more than 5,000 local employment opportunities.

The perfect partnership to deliver the project’s vision

This exciting project will be implemented in partnership with two prestigious global institutions in the fields of healthcare and medical education. The first is UCL’s Medical School (UCLMS), as academic partner. The second is UCLA Health, as clinical partner.

Each of these two leading medical and educational institutions will play a vital role in realising the project’s vision. This includes providing both high quality healthcare and access to the outstanding medical education that produces high calibre clinical professionals and future leaders in the field, all in line with Jordan’s national priorities.

A decade-long commitment

As UCL’s Medical School is ranked ninth in the world for medicine, the institution was a highly appropriate choice of partner for the SJIF. And in an agreement arranged and managed by UCL Consultants (UCLC), part of UCL Innovation & Enterprise, and UCL Medical School Education Consultancy (MSEC), our academics will be working with SJIF for a ten-year period. Their varied role will range from curriculum design and developing medical education resources to support on recruitment and quality assurance.

Ultimately, the new university will have the capacity to successfully educate the next generation of health and medical professionals, using resources and curriculum materials designed in close partnership with UCL.

UCL’s lead consultant for the project is Dr Ahmed Rashid, the Vice Dean (International) for Medical Sciences.

Consultancy and collaboration - think global, act local

For UCLC, the new Jordanian university hospital project represents another important milestone in our Capacity Development portfolio. This is our commitment to bringing UCL’s academic expertise to bear in working internationally to support institutions – often over many years - to strengthen their skills, promote participant learning and develop local expertise so that clients continue to successfully deliver and develop the project when our involvement ends.

Our Capacity Development ethos is genuinely collaborative; mutually beneficial in that each party learns from the others; sustainable with time-limited involvement from us; and ensures local need and context drive successful institutional development.

Ultimately, people are at the heart of our UCL Consultants’ Capacity Development project delivery. We work hard to ensure institutions reach their full potential with bespoke, flexible advice and content, all tailored to their unique circumstances.
