Dr Deni Mantzari spoke at the 19th Global Competition Law Centre (GCLC) Conference on 'Article 102: Past, Present, Future' sharing a panel with Luc Gyselen (Arnold & Porter), Jacques Derenne (Sheppard Mullin), Sir Philip Lowe and Salgado Carranza Álvaroon (College of Europe) on the historical context and intellectual driving forces of Art 102 TFEU.

Dr Mantzari offered a retrospective of the Court's responses to the ideological, political struggles and administrative policy shifts of the European Commission starting from the Treaty of Paris (1951) up until today. She ended her presentation with a provocative question: Is the ECJ embracing the 'more economic approach' at the time of its decline? The Court has set the bar for intervention so high in embracing the effects-based approach. The Commission is responding with amending the Guidance. Have we reached a new equilibrium?

The Conference was opened by Commissioner Margrethe Vestager and was widely attended by academics, practitioners, researchers and competition policy officials.

The programme of the conference can be found on the College of Europe website.
