Two of the MSc Engineering & Education class of 2022, Dr Mike Sulu and Beilei Gou, had a successful evening at the inaugural UCL Widening Participation (WP) Community of Practice Awards ceremony held on 8 December 2022.

The UCL Centre for Engineering Education would like to congratulate two of the MSc Engineering & Education Class of 2022, Dr Mike Sulu and Beilei Gou, for their exceptional achievements at the inaugural UCL Widening Participation (WP) Community of Practice Awards ceremony held on 8 December 2022.

Mike is a lecturer (Education) in the Department of Biochemical Engineering and has recently joined the MSc Engineering & Education teaching team as a Dissertation & Report  Supervisor. Mike was selected as the winner of the Access Award in recognition of his role in developing and implementing access strategies across a range of UCL programmes that support students from underrepresented backgrounds in their transition to university. Mike was also nominated at the same ceremony for his inspirational commitment to WP as Inclusion Lead in the Department of Biochemical Engineering , Co-chair of the UCL Race Equality Steering Group and the UCL Race Equality Implementation Group, and for his tireless efforts on various outreach programmes with the Royal Academy of Engineering, Leading Routes Future Scholars for Year 12 and 13 students, and BADU Community’s Proud To Be programme, and for supporting Year 13 students with UCAS applications and entrance exams.

Beilei Gou was nominated for the Schools & Community Award together with Professor Emanuela Tilley (Director of UCL Engineering's Integrated Engineering Program and UCL Centre for Engineering Director of Studies), Dr Elpida Makrygianni (Head of Education Engagement at UCL Engineering) and Ms Rae Harbird (Senior Research Associate in the UCL Department of Computer Science). The award is in recognition of their work in supporting Year 10 students at Elutec Academy to increase their digital literacy and confidence using computers and the Internet. Beilei was instrumental in making this widening participation engagement project come to life and it has been a real success for Elutec and their students.

Beilei’s WP nomination follows hard on the heels of her recent spectacular achievements at the IEP PGTA Teaching Excellence Awards 2021-22 where she won the Best Overall PGTA Award and the Best Student Engagement Award.
