UCL Centre for Engineering Education

Rae Harbird Award

The UCL Centre of Engineering Education and Faculty of Engineering Sciences have established a new award this year to recognise, reward and celebrate individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes and education, as well as the education community, within the faculty here at UCL.

Rae Bird talking with students

The award is named after Rae Harbird, who passed away in 2023, and who worked in UCL’s Computer Science Department for three decades. Rae leaves a considerable legacy, which you can read more about here, and we want to honour her contributions to education, her collegiality within the Computer Science, IEP and Faculty communities and her thoughtful and untiring work for her students and outreach activities.

This award is in recognition of colleagues who have made a significant and continuous contribution to the education within their department, or cross-faculty education or student experience.

Scope of the award
We want to recognise colleagues who have had a constant presence and ultimately a positive impact on education within their departments, programme, through schools outreach, or in the faculty via the IEP. It is open to all staff from across the faculty.

The award criteria
•            Individual excellence - of enhancing and transforming access to subjects represented by the faculty (i.e. engineering, computer science, management), student outcomes, and/or education, demonstrating significant impact and/or;
•            Raising the profile of excellence - by investing time and effort in supporting colleagues and influencing support for student learning and/or the teaching profession; demonstrating impact and engagement beyond the nominee’s immediate academic or professional role and/or;
•            Developing excellence - of the nominee’s commitment to and impact of ongoing professional development, community engagement, and innovation with regard to teaching and learning and/or learning support.

How to nominate a colleague
