Geraint Thomas successful with Learn 2 Discover funding bid
9 March 2021
Geraint Thomas, (Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, Division of Biosciences), has been successful in the Innovation Scholarship funding bid and has been awarded 730K for a data science e-learning platform called “Learn 2 Discover” (L2D).
L2D will be a collaboration across three parts of the Faculty of Life Sciences, namely: the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, the Department of Structural and Molecular Biology, and the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology, in conjunction with UCL Research IT Services and Birkbeck.
This award comes 10 years after a similar investment in a project called “SysMIC” which has so far made over £1M in CPD income for the university, which is used to support a small group of dedicated expert teachers (winners of a UCL Provosts Teaching Award in 2015).
The new award allows for the expansion of the team to deliver both SysMIC and L2D. L2D will deliver training in data sciences and machine learning approaches to scientists and medics in academia, industry and healthcare sectors.
