Opportunities

The Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research (CBER) is one of the world’s leading research and training centres in ecology and biodiversity science, supporting the next generation of scholars and leaders.

Dr Littlefair has been awarded a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship which will investigate how ecological communities are responding to human impacts globally and deliver technological solutions to the problem of scale in biodiversity monitoring using the air quality networks. We are seeking an experienced postdoctoral scientist to carry out field, laboratory and bioinformatics research associated with the Future Leaders Fellowship.
Closing Date: Wednesday 12th March 2025

The role will involve (i) analysis, writing and publication of existing data-sets, requiring significant skills in bioinformatics, GWAS, analysis of RNA-Seq and microbiome data-sets, including collaboration with the research group in California where there is an active programme of research on leafy greens and developing poplar trees for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (ii) managing the set-up of a new wet molecular and dry laboratory on the Bloomsbury site with associated greenhouses, (iii) active membership of the ‘People and Nature Lab’ based at UCL East, contribution to the new ‘Agritech’ platform laboratory space (iv) leadership on the lab culture for Taylorlab emerging at UCL.
Closing Date: Sunday 23rd February 2025

Biodiversity is vital for providing food, fuel, clean water and other ecosystem services that our wellbeing depends upon. However, factors such as habitat loss and climate change are resulting in widespread extinction. Basic scientific research on the evolutionary and ecological processes that produced our present biodiversity, and applied research on how to preserve this biodiversity in the future are crucial for preventing further losses. This research-led programme is run in collaboration with the Institute of Zoology and the Natural History Museum, providing rigorous training and unparalleled opportunities across the full breadth of pure and applied research in evolutionary, ecological, and conservation science.

Summer Studentships

three students in biosciences lab

Each year the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment offers a number of summer placement opportunities for undergraduate students.

life sciences students in modern lab

The FLS Alumni Summer Studentships offer undergraduates with an interest in research the opportunity to spend up to eight weeks in one of the FLS research laboratories.

 CBER Post Graduate Opportunities

GEE PhD Programme

CBER is within the UCL Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment (GEE). The Department has a thriving postgraduate programme. It recruits 15-20 PhD students per annum from a variety of sources including Research Councils, Charity, UCL schemes and a number of inter-disciplinary centres across UCL.

The Department is closely associated with a number of Doctoral Training Centres: CoMPLEX (Centre for Mathematics and Physics in the Life Sciences and Experimental Biology), UCL-Birkbeck MRC Doctoral Training ProgrammeLIDo (BBSRC London Interdisciplinary Doctoral Programme) and the Training,  Research & Equity in Environmental Sciences Doctoral Landscape Award (TREES).

GEE Fellowships

There are two different processes for Fellowships at GEE. The first is for Independent Fellowships. These are suitable for researchers with some postdoctoral experience who are ready to start up their own independent research programme.

The second is Short Term and Post Doctoral Fellowships. These are suitable for researchers who have recently completed a doctorate.
