The new partnership between UCL’s Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) and Laudes Foundation, an independent foundation accelerating the transition to a climate-positive and inclusive global economy, is formed around the common goal of generating a new understanding and thinking around concepts of public purpose and public value at the centre of the political economy.

IIPP is seeking to expand its research, education programmes and public engagement, which sit at the cross-section of philosophy, economics, and political science, to create and drive new economic thinking.

This partnership will bring global thought leaders, artists, activists and movement-builders from policy, academia and industry to work in-house alongside IIPP researchers.

With the support of Laudes Foundation, IIPP aims to deepen, test and accelerate its practice-based methodologies in different global contexts and therefore, develop its practice-based theorising.

Since it was founded in 2017, IIPP has had a significant impact in reframing public and economic policies as being more than just ‘corrections’ of market failures towards supporting new societal missions. Its main goal is to help governments to become driven by public purpose.

As part of this partnership and over the next four years, IIPP plans to develop a dedicated multidisciplinary studio approach in which it will develop policy toolkits that are tested in practice in diverse contexts, textbooks for graduate programmes and a case library for executive and leadership education.

IIPP Director, Professor Mariana Mazzucato, said:
We believe that the greatest global challenge is not a single issue, but rethinking innovation and policy frameworks to unlock investment across business, public agencies, and civil society to fuel fresh solutions towards the common good. A new narrative needs this new movement to be cross-disciplinary and dedicated to both thought-leadership and creating practical new tools. We are extremely happy to join forces with the Laudes Foundation in driving this new economic thinking.”

Laudes Foundation Director of Finance & Capital Market Transformation, Kelly Clark, said:
Laudes Foundation is supporting brave action to ensure capital flows address, not exacerbate, the challenges of the 21st century. For this action to scale, we need an economy driven by holistic goals and multi-disciplinary thinking. We believe we can contribute to this goal by demonstrating what it looks like in practice. This is at the heart of our partnership with UCL IIPP.
