The Bartlett Synergy Grants fund activities that lead to, or support, interdisciplinary research collaborations in the Built Environment.

The Bartlett Synergy Grants scheme funds activities that lead to, or support, interdisciplinary research collaborations in the Built Environment. It seeks to enhance the Bartlett Faculty’s cross-disciplinary research that can bring multiple perspectives and approaches to global challenges, and as part of this wider approach, to champion ethical values within Built Environment research.

We are keen to receive applications that support new interdisciplinary research ideas and activities. This covers all modalities of research, including action research and design research. Projects may comprise pilot studies, proof of concept work, and feasibility studies. We particularly welcome projects that articulate development beyond the lifetime of the grant, including plans for securing further funding from external sources.  

Eligibility

Applications must include at least two members of academic staff from two different Bartlett schools/units as a minimum. In addition, the collaboration can also include colleagues based in other UCL Faculties or HEIs, as well as international organisations.

Funding

The maximum budget available from the Faculty is £30,000 per annum. The fund can support three projects of up to £10,000 each.

The Bartlett Research Materialisation Grant

The Faculty's Bartlett Research Materialisation Grant is an award scheme (now biennial) that supports members of staff from at least two Bartlett departments to collaborate on a model, prototype, exhibition, installation or pavilion.

Collaborations with other experts from outside the Faculty are welcome, such as artists, curators, designers, engineers, material scientists and sociologists.

The project aims to create an innovative response to the contemporary and future needs of our built environment, producing work of international research quality, engaging with specific audiences inside and outside academia.

The successful applicants must also describe their plans for securing research funding for the future development of the project.

The Bartlett Visiting Research Fellows is a programme to host four visiting post-doctoral researchers for three months at The Bartlett – leading scholars and practitioners who will collaborate with Bartlett staff on subjects related to the chosen theme for that year. Each subject will aim to bring together expertise from at least two of The Bartlett’s eight schools and sections.

The purpose is for these fellows to conduct research and collaborate with Bartlett Faculty staff on subjects that are related to that year's chosen research theme.

While here at UCL, The Bartlett Visiting Research Fellows will be mentored by relevant staff from at least two Research Groups across the Faculty who are identified in the applicant’s proposal. The Fellows will also be invited to participate in wider Faculty research activities and to present their research-work-in-progress at one of our regular Bartlett Research Exchange events.

We will select The Bartlett Visiting Research Fellows based on the quality of their research work to date, their future potential as scholars or practitioners, the innovativeness of the cross-disciplinary research project they propose to carry out during their fellowship period, and the relevance of the subject matter to our chosen theme of Intercultural Interaction.
