The Bartlett Film+Place+Architecture Network

"Film + Place + Architecture" is a Bartlett funded and endorsed Doctoral Network, founded by a group of PhD student using filmmaking as a research tool.

Film + Place + Architecture is currently inactive

We wanted a platform where we could open up dialogue between students and practitioners working in the field, to share experience and discover new ways our practice could inform our research.

We aim at organising one event per academic term, inviting filmmakers, artists and other professionals to share their experience with students, while also allowing students to present their work as basis for further discussion. We also run a biweekly reading group during terms.

Preparation/Pre-Production

28 May 2015

This seminar is concerned with the period before the camera starts rolling. When Approaching filmmaking as a methodology or research tool, this process might be different from what we see in the film industry. In this session, we would like to discuss what preparing a film means for a researcher-filmmaker/ filmmaker-researcher. For example: what is the value of writing a storyboard? What is the role of theory in the process? How to pitch a film as part of research? What does it mean to partially prepare a film by looking at, and analysing, films already made?

Key speakers:

Sandra Schäfer, artist and filmmaker.

Christopher Iain Smith, filmmaker.

  • Dr. Nat Chard, The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.
  • Phuong-Tram Nguyen, PhD candidate The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL
