The Heritage of West African Civilizations: Pillage, Objects, Sites and Museums

16 December 2022

Kevin MacDonald (UCL Institute of Archaeology) was recently invited to speak at Rugby School as part of their academic enrichment programme in History.

On 29 November, our Director Kevin MacDonald presented a major invited lecture to the A-level students and staff of Rugby School.

His talk 'The Heritage of West African Civilizations: Pillage, Objects, Sites and Museums' was part of an ongoing research project by Rugby students - “Schools of Empire” – which is based upon their collections and archives (and was recent winner of the BSA ‘Best New Index Initiative’).

Kevin stayed on for a dinner to discuss archaeology as a career with students and met with student contributors to the “Schools of Empire” project the next day.

According to the school:

Hydra [Rugby School academic society] was delighted to welcome Prof. Kevin MacDonald, Director of @UCLarchaeology to speak to upper school Historians about 'The Heritage of West African Civilisations'. It was a superb lecture that left a lasting impression."

The above photo shows Kevin beside Rugby’s historic playing fields and on the flank of a potentially prehistoric mound, known as ‘The Island’, where there may be some IoA geophysics work in the coming year (watch this space!).
