University placements

We actively encourage university student placements at Archaeology South-East, and take students for placements or paid work (circumstance dependant), which can last either weeks or months. We aim for this to give the students valuable experience in commercial archaeology as well as the opportunity to learn practical skills. The number of placements we offer are limited, but please contact us and we will try to arrange a placement that builds upon your skills and interests.

We also provide year-long placements for UCL Institute of Archaeology students as part of the BA Archaeology with Placement Year. Students on this placement work alongside ASE archaeologists as a part of a professional team to excavate, survey, study, manage and conserve historic sites and finds. You can read about meet our students and find out about their experiences of their placements over at our Placement Student Hub.

School work experience placements

Each year we provide a limited number of one-week placement opportunities for students at local schools who are interested in history and archaeology and want to find out more. The placement offers an insight into a number of aspects of commercial archaeology; as well as an introduction to working in the field, the students will also learn about archaeological illustration, photography. and have an opportunity to try archaeological finds processing. If you are interested in a school work experience placement please contact us directly or ask your school to contact us on your behalf.

Further information about becoming involved in archaeology through local societies, training excavations, or at a higher education level can be found on the Current Archaeology website.

Please note that we cannot provide transport or accommodation for any of these placements, and travel to and from the offices must be arranged by the student.
