The Library is on the ground floor of the Eastman Dental Hospital, about half way down the Gray’s Inn Road. Enter through the Sussex Wing entrance from the hospital courtyard and the library can be found immediately on the right.
It is approximately a 10 minute walk from King’s Cross or Russell Square Underground Stations. Buses 17, 45 and 46 stop outside the hospital and the 45 and 46 can be caught outside King’s Cross Station.
Disabled visitors should contact the library prior to their visit as special arrangements may need to be made for some users.
UCL Library Services also offers a range of other facilities for disabled users which are listed separately.
All full time UCL staff and students are automatically enrolled as members of the library. Most Eastman Dental Hospital staff and students are also eligible for full membership. Further details about membership requirements for other readers are available separately.
To ensure that your use of the library is as pleasant as possible please read the code of behaviour.
The library catalogue (Explore) details items held by UCL Library Services. Advice and help with using Explore, including video guides, can be found on the Explore help pages, or ask a member of library staff for assistance.
We currently hold about 3200 books which are arranged using a classification system based on that of the dentistry section of the National Library of Medicine but broadened and modified to suit our users’ needs. They are located in the Main and Reading rooms. Most books are available on a 4 week loan but we have a small collection of 3-day loan items and of reference books which are not available for loan.
We have an extensive journal print archive located on the mezzanine floor in the reading room. Latest issues of current print journals are located on the racks in the main room by the library desk. All print journals are reference only. An extensive range of electronic journals can also be accessed by UCL staff and students with UCL computer accounts.
Visitors to the library can use the Explore Access Points to search resources and download articles where licenses permit.
A small collection of DVDs and CD ROMs are available for loan from the bookcase under the office window in the main room. Please take the case to the library desk to issue and return the disks as the self-service machine will not work with these items.
UCL staff and students with UCL computer accounts can access an extensive number of databases. Visitors to the library can use the Explore Access Point computers to use those licenced for walk-in users. Select Biomedicine and Health from the drop down list for relevant databases.
- 12 ISD UCL Desktop networked computers.
- 10 UCL Library managed computers.
- 6 UCLH networked computers (for NHS staff only).
- 2 Explore Access Point computers with access to licensed UCL ejournals and databases for those without UCL computer accounts.
- 4 scanners (for photographs, radiographs, slides and text), attached to PCs running Adobe Photoshop or Elements.
- Wireless access to UCL resources is available to UCL users via eduroam and to the internet only for other registered library users via UCLGuest.
Library staff will be happy to troubleshoot when you experience a computing problem. However, ISD are responsible for the managed computers in the cluster room and we are not able to provide computer skills training. Staff and students of the UCL Eastman Dental Institute should go to UCL's Information Services Division for instructor led self-paced and video training courses as well as drop-in support.
Printing & photocopying
There are facilities for printing for both UCL users and for visitors to the library. Users without a UCL ID card can open an account at the library desk to print or photocopy. Black & white prints cost from 3p to 6p per print and colour prints are 30p but there is a minimun charge of £1.00 for using this service.
Users with a UCL ID card can print or photocopy in colour or black & white using the MFDs (muti-function devices). The colour MFD will not be available when the cluster room, where it is located, is being used for teaching. There is a black & white MFD in the main room. Pricing and further information is available separately.
Library staff are happy to help with queries regarding using the library, library resources, biomedical and health resources, and literature searching. Your enquiries can be submitted by email, phone (020 3456 1045) or in person in the library.
Staff and students at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute or Eastman Dental Hospital may book a session with library
staff who offer expert training and advice on information resources, particularly
database searching, bibliographic software and critical appraisal. We also provide a mediated searching service and assist with alerting services.
Inter Library Loans
UCL staff, students and NHS staff can fill an online inter library loan form when they need to borrow books and journal articles which are not available at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute Library. Further details and charges can be found on the Interlending & Document Supply webpage.
