Undergraduates
Undergraduate students may conduct research that is deemed low risk as it does not pose significant ethical risk to vulnerable subjects and is not on a sensitive topic. Undergraduate students should apply to the IfWH LREC for low-risk projects.
Undergraduate iBSc students at IfWH cannot generally conduct research that poses any significant ethical risk to vulnerable subjects or is on sensitive topics unless this work is carried out within the confines of a supervisor’s project for which ethical approval has already been granted.
Postgraduates
Postgraduate students may conduct research that is deemed low risk and does not pose significant ethical risk to vulnerable subjects and is not on a sensitive topic. Postgraduate students should apply to the IfWH LR REC for any low-risk projects
Unlike UGs, PGTs can undertake research involving vulnerable participants and/or sensitive topics when there is no pre-existing ethical approval. This requires an application for ethical approval to be submitted to the main medium/high risk UCL REC. Applying through UCL REC involves considerable work and longer timelines: the process must be begun early and with close working between student and supervisor.
Staff, Post-docs and Postgraduate Researchers
Staff, Postdocs and PhD students can apply to the IfWH LREC for any low-risk projects. Any medium/high risk projects must continue to be submitted to the main UCL REC.
