First UK surgery in the womb for babies with spina bifida

A team from UCL, University College London Hospitals (UCLH) and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) has operated on the abnormally developed spinal cords of two babies in the womb, in a medical first for the UK.

The 30-strong team involved in the first two operations was coordinated by fetal medicine consultant Anna David (UCL EGA Institute for Women's Health) and UCLH. Professor David is also supported by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) UCLH Biomedical Research Centre.
