We answer a selection of frequently asked questions about the programme and our admissions process.
- What will it cost?
Fees vary depending on the degree sought, and whether enrolment is part-time or full-time, and whether the applicant is from the UK//EU or overseas. You can find information on the UCL main page for fees.
Part-time students should note that fees in their second year of study are linked to the fees in their first year. They will not rise to match any later increase in the basic fee schedule. However, part-time students normally should plan for the second year fees to increase more-or-less in line with inflation.
- Is Funding Available?
STS offers several bursaries. So does UCL, and other funding opportunities are available. Visit our advice on funding.
- Can I apply for accommodation at UCL?
There is limited accommodation available for International students. Home/EU students are strongly advised to seek private sector accommodation. Further details are available on the UCL accommodation site.
- The course starts in September. Can I start at a different time?
Unfortunately no. Our taught degrees begin in September; it is not possible to start at a different time.
- Can I study by distance learning?
No. We do not offer distance learning for any degree because we place great emphasis on being an active member of our academic community.
- Can I study part-time?
Yes. Students can study part-time in our PhD, MSc and Diploma programmes. There is no part-time option for the PG Certificate.
- I have a science background. Can I apply?
Yes, certainly. Our programme is designed to be suitable regardless of background. Additional support and training is available for writing essays and undertaking research outside familiar fields, should you require it.
- I have been away from formal education for a long time. Will I be able to keep up?
Normally, yes. Our admissions team will be able to assess your background and offer support and guidance. During the degree, students meet frequently with tutors and receive feedback on progress. Additional support is available for students who want help with writing or research skills.
- Will I be able to work the class timetable around my other commitments?
Only one module is compulsory for all students. This runs in the Autumn term. The class timetable is made available in advance so students can choose their other courses to fit around their other commitments. We do not teach in the evenings or on weekends.
- What are the term dates?
Term begins at the end of September. Further details can be found on the UCL Term Dates page.
- Where will classes be held?
Most of our teaching takes place in Central London on UCL’s Bloomsbury Campus. Our department is situated on Gordon Square.
- The course starts in September. Can I start at a different time?
UCL and its student union UCLU have a wealth of support and facilities available for graduate students.
- Is there help available for disabled students?
Yes, certainly. UCL offers a range of support services for students with disabilities.
- Do you accept late applications after the deadline?
No. Our final application deadline is the 26th April 2021 for entry in September 2021. After this date, we cannot accept applications. You can apply any time from October for admission the following September, and you are advised to apply as early as possible.
- How do I know if UCL has received my application?
Applicants are able to check the status of their application through the Applicant Portal on Portico.
- I need funding for the MSc. How do I find out about scholarships?

- I don't have my transcripts yet, what do I do?
Some students (usually those in the process of completing degrees when they apply) do not have transcripts sent out until the August before they are due to start their Masters programme. You can make an incomplete application and be considered WITHOUT your transcripts.
When prompted to attach your transcripts on the online application you can attach a document containing a brief explanation as to why you cannot do so. This will then allow you to proceed and submit.
However, we cannot issue an unconditional offer until all paperwork has been provided. We also cannot make an unconditional offer until your application is complete, including acceptable proof of language proficiency (where appropriate) and references.
- Do both of my references need to be academic?
One of your references must be academic. Your application will not be processed without one. The other may be from an employer or colleague who has worked with you closely.
- I am going to take an English language test later in the year. Can I still apply now?
You may apply now for a place on a programme without a current English test provided you send your qualification as soon as you receive it. If you are offered a place, it will be conditional on your providing evidence of English before the start of the course.
- Can I ask for feedback if my application is unsuccessful?
Sorry, no. We regret that we cannot offer feedback on unsuccessful applications.
